Mantra (in) Yoga

A deep dive into the origins, purpose, and practice of mantra

with Sannyasi Mahesh.

Sundays 11am - 12:15pm US EDT

Session Dates: September 27 and October 4, 11, 18.

Mantra is one of yoga's oldest and most complete practices — a way of using sound to steady the mind, harmonize the emotions, and turn the whole body into an instrument of awareness. Long before yoga became associated with postures, it was carried through mantra: revealed sounds, passed teacher to student, that work directly on the mind and on our sense of who we are.

Ancient as it is, mantra is very well suited to the particular difficulties of modern life. So many of us live with a mind pulled in a dozen directions at once - screens, stress and overwhelm. Mantra meets all of this head on:. A repeated sound gives a restless, over-stimulated mind something simple and steady to rest on; chanting releases tension and lifts the mood in a way that thinking a problem over rarely can; and sung together, mantra rebuilds real, embodied connection. This is not vague self-help — it is a precise, time-tested technology for a human being under pressure, as relevant now as it has ever been.

This four-session course is a proper, systematic introduction to what a mantra actually is, where these sounds come from, why they are arranged as they are, and how to make them a living part of your practice and your day. The emphasis throughout is on genuine usefulness: not sounds to admire from a distance, but tools you can reach for — on the mat, at your desk, in a sleepless night, or in the middle of an ordinary difficult day. Every idea we explore is something you then chant, feel and take away with you.

Who is this workshop for:

This workshop is open to practitioners of all levels, from complete beginners to the more experienced. No prior knowledge of Sanskrit, chanting or mantra is needed— we start with the foundations of sound and pronunciation, and build carefully from there. Experienced practitioners will find useful elements to deepen their practice, particularly around the science of mantra and the structure of a personal sādhanā.

This workshop will be conducted in four sessions online via Zoom.

About your Teacher:

Sannyasi Mahesh

Mahesh is a classically trained yoga teacher with sixteen years of teaching experience and more than four years of residential training at the Bihar School of Yoga. Within that comprehensive training, mantra became his particular specialism. Rooted in the Satyananda / Bihar lineage, his teaching draws on a sustained study of Sanskrit devotional literature, mantra śāstra and Vedāntic philosophy. He is interested in the science of how mantra works as in its lived, everyday practice, and he has a gift for making a subject that can seem ancient, alien and obscure, genuinely warm, clear, practical and accessible. Through The Living Yoga Project, Mahesh teaches mantra and meditation to practitioners around the world, always with the same aim — to give people not just a set of sounds to repeat, but a real, grounded practice of their own.
